Subaru Telescope

An 8.3-metre (27-foot) telescope at the Mauna Kea Observatories in Hawaii for the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Construction began in 1991 and full operation is expected in 1999. It is designed to operate in both the visual and infrared spectral regions. "Subaru" is the Japanese word for the Pleiades.
